Straightsmouth Gospel Hall

Proclaiming Jesus Christ from Greenwich, London

Jesus said : "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened,
and I will give you rest.

Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."

Matthew 11:28-30

History

1902

Since 1902 there has been in Straightsmouth, a place of Christian worship.

The first building was known as the "Iron Room" because it was made from corrugated iron, which before World War II had huge Sunday Schools, and both young men and young women's meetings.

Near end of WW2

Near the end of the war, a V2 made a direct hit on that part of Straightsmouth, and the Iron Room and several houses were destroyed.

1950s

The Christians meeting at the Iron Room were able to rent a shop in South Street, and then in the early 1950s the Iron Room was rebuilt.

1980s

In the 1980s, developers bought the site from British Rail and built the flats currently on the site - with the Gospel Hall on the ground floor, as stipulated in the planning permission.

Now

The present building looks far better than the concrete shed surrounded by derelict garages, which formed this part of Straightsmouth before. We have been 30 years in these premises and have brought the Hall into the 21st century, and we extend that same invitation given for the last 100 years, to come and hear the Good News of Jesus Christ, who is "the same yesterday, today and forever".
